Social Work Service at the Puget Sound VA Medical Center located in Tacoma, Washington has an immediate opening for a Social Worker in Primary Care, to work as a Clinical Medical Social Worker.
This position is responsible to provide a full range of social work services within commonly accepted standards of social work practice which includes casework, individual, family and group counseling, discharge planning, case management and other duties including but not limited to:
Perform psychosocial assessments;
Treatment planning;
Short-term, solution focused counseling with individuals and families that may be in crisis;
Work as a member of an interdisciplinary team;
Implement a written treatment program;
Provide consultation/education to Veterans and families on community resources, advance directives and VA benefits;
Provide case management to Veterans and family members;
Act as a liaison between the VA and community resources;
Provide wellness/prevention education
Coordinate treatment and communicate with the care lines to facilitate continuity of care for Veterans;
Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, Evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: Have a Master's degree in social work from a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
Licensure: This position requires you to provide independent clinical social work assessments. In order to work independently you must possess a license at the independent level.
Exception: _ At the GS-9 level the VA may waive the licensure and/or certification requirement for persons who are otherwise qualified, pending completion of state prerequisites for examination. VA social workers who are not licensed at the time of appointment must be licensed or certified at the Master's level, within 3 years of their appointment as a social worker _or_ 1 year from the day they meet the full requirements of the state for licensure or certification, whichever is longer. Those who fail to obtain state licensure or certification within the required time frames must be removed from the General Schedule (_GS)-185 social worker series. This may result in termination of employment.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS: SALARY IS TO BE DETERMINED BY THE PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS BOARD. In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met to determine grade level of the position:
GS-9: Must meet all basic requirements.
GS-11: In addition to meeting all basic requirements, 1 year of professional social work experience, equivalent to the next lower grade level, under qualified social work supervision. This experience must have been in a clinical setting and must have demonstrated the potential to perform advanced assignments independently. _NON-QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE_: Clinical social work experience obtained prior to completion of the requirements for a Master's Degree in Social Work does not satisfy this requirement. NOTE: _ A clinical setting is a medical center, clinic (medical or psychiatric), a residential treatment center, or any other type of facility where social work participates in collaborative treatment and is identified with the medical profession._

In addition to meeting basic requirements, a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work. A doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required 1 year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting.
