Peer Counselors are individuals who have experienced mental illness themselves and are on their own recovery journey. Peer MHT's are well grounded in their own recovery and model competency in ongoing coping skills. They help clients identify goals that promote recovery and assist them in identifying services and activities to help reach these goals. At the Recovery Center, Peer MHT's assist clients in their recovery from temporary periods of acute symptoms to help them attain or resume their capacity for independent living. Participate in staff review of Treatment Plans, assist in client wake ups (may include help with basic hygiene), engage clients in therapeutically appropriate interactions, help prepare meals, assist with linens, and help create a safe and therapeutic environment for clients through constructive milieu management. Lead groups in recovery skills, arts and crafts, and leisure activities. Assist with general upkeep of the facility and documentation of the work that is done and of the progress of the clients.
To be employed as a Peer Counselor a person must: 1. Be or commit to becoming Certified as a Peer Counselor by the State Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery within one year of employment, which involves completing specialized training approved by the State of WA and passing a written and oral State exam. The training and exam are free. This requires: Self-identifying as a person who is receiving or has received mental health services and demonstrating that they have been well grounded in their own mental health recovery for at least one year. 2. Pass a WA State criminal background check (no recent serious convictions). 3. Be eligible to become a WA State Agency Affiliated Counselor after being hired. In addition, this position also requires the following knowledge and skills: knowledge of mental disorders and substance abuse issues, effective counseling skills, ability to assess and teach independent living skills, good interpersonal communication skills, and good computer-user skills. Prefer knowledge of Pierce County public mental health system, community resources, and recovery-based and trauma-informed models of care. Prefer having reliable personal auto, driver's license, good driving record, and personal auto insurance. Prefer AA degree in social services related field and 1 year experience working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness.
Knowledge and Skills Needed:1.Knowledge and understanding of mental disorders. 2 Knowledge of symptom management skills 3. Good interpersonal communication skills 4. Entry-level computer-user skills 5. Prefer basic understanding of psychotropic medication 6. Prefer access to personal auto, with driver's license, good driving record, and auto insurance. Prefer ability to drive agency van.
Education and/or
Experience: Must be eligible for Washington State Agency Affiliated Counselor. Must have First Aid-CPR certificate and Food Handler's card, and TB test annually. Prefer degree in social services related field and 1 year experience working with mentally ill clients in a residential setting or inpatient setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
